Anogeia Weaving House

Anogeia Weaving House is conceived as a living center for the preservation of Crete’s weaving heritage, inspired by Critical Regionalism and Aris Konstantinidis’ idea of architecture as the “vessels of life” found across Greece. Designed with the clarity, modesty, and material honesty of traditional Anogeian structures, it aims to look and feel as though it has always been there — rooted in place, landscape, and memory.

At the same time, the building is shaped as a welcoming environment where people naturally want to spend time. Its calm spatial character offers a subtle, unobtrusive backdrop to the woven masterpieces, allowing the craft, the hands, and the stories to remain at the center.

The project was built in close collaboration with local craftsmen and contractors, actively engaging the community. In parallel with the design and construction, an extensive investigation into local weavings, techniques, and hidden textile treasures unfolded — a process carried out together with Anogeian families and weavers, ensuring that the knowledge embedded in the craft informed the architecture itself.

Bridging tradition and contemporary use, the Weaving House becomes a space where making, learning, and community converge — ensuring that an essential mountain craft continues to live, evolve, and be shared.

The project was envisioned and implemented with the generous donation by Costantza Sbokou‑Costantakopoulou, along with the support of her daughter Carmen, in collaboration with The Mare Studio.
