Michael Werner Gallery Athens

This project transforms a traditional Athenian apartment into a refined, discreet contemporary art gallery.

The design maintains the building’s residential character while reconfiguring the interior to support flexible curation, adaptable exhibition layouts, and intimate private viewings. The spatial strategy focuses on clarity, flow, and neutrality, allowing artworks to take centre stage while preserving the warmth and familiarity of a lived‑in environment.

Carefully selected vintage furniture and fittings introduce a sense of continuity, connecting the apartment’s history with the gallery’s curatorial ethos. These pieces add texture and personality without overwhelming the space, creating a subtle dialogue between past and present. The result is a hybrid setting that blends the comfort of a home with the precision of a professional gallery.

This “lived‑in gallery” quality enables the space to operate on multiple levels: as a venue for public exhibitions, as a setting for invitation‑only encounters, and as a welcoming environment for collectors, artists, and visitors. The project demonstrates how domestic architecture can be reimagined to support cultural programming, offering a range of viewing experiences that feel both personal and thoughtfully curated.
